Work on the Boankra Integrated Logistics Terminal (BILT) is progressing steadily with phase I reaching a 50% completion point.
According to the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Shippers’ Authority (GSA), Mr Kwesi Baffour Sarpong, BILT, when complete, would reduce port congestion and overall transportation costs, as well as facilitate regional trade.
The first phase includes civil works, earthworks, road networks, drainage systems, container freight terminals, container handling facilities, bonded warehouses, as well as administrative and operations buildings.
At an inspection tour of the facility, Mr Baffour Sarpong said the BILT is a part of the Ghana Trade and Investment Gateway (GHATIG) programme, adding that “it will drive economic progress and strengthen regional connectivity upon completion.
The Ashanti Regional Minister, Mr Simon Osei Mensah, expressed satisfaction with the progress of work, reiterating the government’s commitment to allocating funds for the project to be completed timely.
“Without the logistics terminal, the nearby Ghana Free Zones Authority and Ashanti Industrial Park will not function properly.
“I am pleased with the work done. The critical civil works, drains, culverts and bridges have been completed. The remaining tasks should be finished in due time,” he said.
Project Consultant, Dr. John York, said, “The remaining 50% will comprise the superstructure and the terminal bay to fully operationalise the facility,” he disclosed
With its proximity to the Kumasi International Airport, BILT is set to establish Ghana as a premier multimodal transportation hub in West Africa, boosting the country’s leadership role within the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
