The government would provide a stimulus package to cushion private schools in Ghana to enable them to cope with the impact of Covid-19, the Vice president, Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia has said.
He said the Finance Minister has been directed to help the private schools following the outbreak of the virus and the subsequent government’s restrictions on the education system which has negatively affected the funds of the private schools.
“The President has already given a directive to the Minister to take a look at how we can cushion our private schools and I think some funding will be made available in that direction,” he added
Dr. Bawumia, who was speaking to some teachers of public and private schools in the Ablekuma Central constituency as part of his tour of the Greater Accra Region, said the government would engage the school owners on the issue to resolve their plight.
The call to lessen the plight of private schools comes on the back of the outbreak of COVID-19, which has led to the closure of schools with classes being taken online. However, the private schools suffered the most as a result of lack of revenue since they depend on school fees to pay teachers and run the school.
One of the groups which has added its voice to the call is the Neogenics Education Group, an educational consultancy in Ghana. It petitioned President Akufo-Addo to support the private schools with financial stimulus packages to enable them to run again.
