Effective April 2, 2021, all Mobile Money (MoMo) customers will now be required to present valid identity (ID) cards before any MoMo cash-out (withdrawal) transaction can be processed, Mobile Telecommunications Network (MTN) MoMo has announced.
As a result of this directive, the following ID cards —Ghana Card, Driving License, Passport, Voter’s ID, and NHIS will be acceptable and all MoMo agents will be required to select the ID type and enter the ID card number presented by the customer before the transaction can be completed.
Commenting on the announcement in a News Release issued in Accra on March 16, 2021, Mr Eli Hini, General Manager, Mobile Money Limited, noted that apart from being a regulatory requirement, enforcement of the directive would also complement efforts being taken by MTN MoMo to curb MoMo fraud in the country.
Mr Hini reiterated the commitment of MTN MoMo to the fight against MoMo fraud and to the implementation of measures that would make the service safer.
He said without a valid ID card, MoMo transactions could not be processed, adding that the request for an ID card for MoMo transactions was not a new requirement, but had always been part of the service offering that was strictly enforced at MTN branch Offices or Service Centers nationwide.
He urged customers to make MoMo usage safer, by observing the three Golden Rules for mobile money usage, namely, that customers should at no point disclose their MoMo pin codes; customers should never allow other people to perform transactions on their behalf; and that they should not entertain any calls that seek to discuss their wallets or get them to respond to promotions they have not participated in.
Mr Hini also advised customers who make deposits on their wallets to always check to ensure the funds had been received before they leave the vendors shop.
