The Deputy Minister of Lands and Natural Resources in charge of mines, George Mireku Duker, has called on members of the District Mining Committees across the country to rise above personal gains and play a role in the government’s restructuring programme in the mining sector.
He said this at the inauguration of the District Mining Committees in the Central Region.
He said the government’s intention to revive the small-scale mining sector would be not achieved if the committees did not effectively discharge their mandate.
According to him, the committees have strategic role to play in helping the government achieve its objective for the sector and added that Section 92 of the Minerals & Mining Act, (Act 703), 2006 enforces their mandate to discharge for results.
The Central Regional Minister, Justina Marigold Assan, commended the Lands Ministry for bringing a “rejuvenating program to ensure compliance with the Mining Act 2006.”
She stressed on the importance of the country’s resources to the socio-economic development of the country and justify the drastic actions the government was taking to address the challenges in the sector.
