A water treatment plant has been mounted on the rehabilitated Tono Dam to provide portable water to 38 communities in the Upper East Region.
Communities that will benefit from this project are Navrongo, Bongo and Bolgatanga.
The Upper East Regional Minister, Stephen Yakubu, who disclosed this at the third International Conference on Irrigation and Agricultural Development (IRAD) in Tamale, said the rehabilitation works on the Tono Dam have been completed and handed to the Kassena-Nankana District Assembly.
He said the Dam can irrigate over 11,000 acres of land, adding that Vea, Tamne and Pwalugu multi-purpose dams were under construction to serve other communities in the region.
He said the government would not relent on providing water to all communities in the region and called on the residents to guide against irresponsible activities such as illegal gold mining that could undermine these efforts.
