The Ashanti Region has launched the 2022 Regional GREEN Job Fairs, an initiative by the Ministry of Employment and Labour Relations (MELR) to support people who have the potential to develop successful enterprises in an ecologically friendly manner.
The programme held in Kumasi last Tuesday forms part of the plans to implementing the National Green Job Strategy and to appropriately train job searchers to meet the demands of future employers.
The partners of the fair were SNV-Ghana, the Ashanti Gold Industries (AGI) and the Ghana Chamber of Young Entrepreneur.
In a speech read on behalf of the Sector Minister, Mr Ignatius Baffour Awuah, indicated that the job fair approach has proved very useful and practical in terms of linking over 10,000 job seekers, particularly the youth to the available job vacancies.
He reiterated that when entrepreneurs are supported to grow and expand, they would be in a better position to create more room for the employment of job seekers, thereby, contributing to the reduction of unemployment.
On the effect of climate change, the Minister opined “we cannot continue to do business as usual, the Ministry is promoting the Green Jobs Agenda where we are seeking to create or facilitate the creation of jobs that do not pose any harm to the environment and also contribute to the reduction of emissions”.
On his part, the Director General for the SNV Ghana’s Opportunity for Youth Employment (OYE) training programme added that, the programme provides employable skills to unemployed youth as well as coaching and mentoring support to entrepreneurs and people who want to start their own businesses and create jobs for others.
He disclosed that under the OYE programme, over 30, 000 youth have been trained in various skills and 5,000 placed in internship and job vacancies under the green project.
The next Regional Job Fairs will take place in Takoradi on Tuesday , 22nd November, 2022 under the theme, ‘Green and Circular Economy: A sure way to creating decent and sustainable employment and jobs”.
