As part of efforts to promote waste management among school children, the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA), through the Holistic Reinforcement for Sustainable Development (HORESD) project, launched a waste recycling competition among school children in April this year.
Amankwatia M/A Basic ‘B’ school emerged as the winner and took home €3,000 at the Prempeh Assembly Hall in Kumasi.
Speaking at the ceremony, the Kumasi Mayor, Mr Samuel Pyne, underscored the need to instil environmental values in young minds, adding that schools’ role in managing waste in the city was very crucial.
He said the assembly was creating a good foundation on environmental sustainability for the future generation with a strategy of making the school children environmental stewards.
Five schools comprising St. Joseph’s R/C Basic, Fankyenebra M/A Basic, Buokrom M/A Basic, Amankwatia M/A Basic ‘B’, and Bantama Presby Basic were selected from the various sub-metros to participate in the competition.
The competing schools were evaluated on waste collection and segregation, school compound cleanliness, classroom cleanliness, and pupils’ enthusiasm and creativity in recycling. Other areas of evaluation included engagement with waste aggregators, awareness among people, teacher awareness and teamwork.
The event also recognised individual excellence, with Mavis Horsu, the Headteacher of St. Joseph’s Basic School, receiving a laptop as the Best Headteacher, and Theresah Adwoa Adomako winning a laptop as the Best SHEP Coordinator.
Buokrom Basic ‘B’ School received a refrigerator as the Best Teamwork award. Additionally, pupils and teachers from the participating schools received books, school bags, and other prizes for their efforts.
