The Twifo Hemang Lower Denkyira District Committee for Development has proposed the establishment of Girls Model School in the District to encourage young girls to continue their education after completing basic school.
The Committee has identified a private school facility which the owner was willing to sell at a cost of GHȻ200,000.00 to house the proposed model school and an additional GHȻ90, 000.00 to rehabilitate the building to make it conducive for learning.
Secretary to the Committee, Mr Kweku Asamoah, disclosed this when he presented findings of a research commissioned by the Twifo Hemang Lower Denkyira District Assembly (THLDDA).
The findings revealed that 82 percent of girls in the District was not able to continue education after completion of basic schools.
This means only 18 percent of girls who complete Junior High Schools (JHS) in the District are able to enroll in the second cycle education as compared to 87 percent of their male counterparts who make it up to secondary and technical schools.
At a discussion forum of the findings of the research at the Assembly’s meeting on Wednesday, August 26, 2020, it emerged that girls in the District mostly drop out of school due to teenage pregnancy, lack of parental guidance, poverty and old perception that women are only fit for the kitchen.
Ms Dorothy Abakah, the Desk Officer for Girl Child Education at the District Education Directorate said the proposed model school would expand access to second cycle education to girls in the area and called on all to contribute their quota so the proposed Girls Model School dream a reality.
