The government has said eighty-eight Agenda 111 hospitals are currently under construction and at various stages of completion across the country.
The Minister for Information, Mr Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, disclosed this when he paid a working visit to one of the sites in Trede, Ashanti Region on Thursday.
He was accompanied by the Presidential Advisor on Health, Dr Nsiah Asare to monitor the progress of work on the project which started on August 17, 2021.
He stated, “We currently have 88 hospitals under construction, grouped into eight zones, comprising 54 projects. We have visited 33 sites so far and we believe it is important to showcase the progress from Trede, where it all began.”
According to the Minister, the Trede project was at an advanced level of completion with “62 per cent” of work completed.
“We are sure of commissioning it by the end of the year 2023,” he noted.
He also stated that contractors had been tasked to complete about 45 of the hospitals this year looking at the impressive progress of their work.
He stated that three contracts had been terminated and are being re-awarded because they were not meeting the project standards.
On his part, the Presidential advisor on health, Dr Anthony Nsiah Asare assured that there is sufficient funding available for the completion of the project.
He stated, “The Agenda 111 hospitals are located across the country and comprise 101 District Hospitals, 7 Regional Hospitals, 2 Regional Psychiatric Hospitals, 1 National Psychiatric Hospital (Accra Psychiatric Hospital).”
He noted that the project has been running for two years since the appointment of a consultant in October 2020.
For effective management and supervision, he said, the project had been subdivided into eight zones with averagely 14 sites in each zone.
“Each site has a full complement of consultants to manage, which include; Architects, Civil Engineers, Structural Engineers, Mechanical Engineers and Biomedical Engineers. There is the additional Project Management oversight by HG to coordinate each zone,” he added.
He noted that upon completion, the hospitals would create employment opportunities for nurses and contribute to the overall economic growth of Ghana.
