The Ministries of Health and Employment and Labour Relations are working to streamline the migration policy to address current and emerging issues, especially the migration of health workers.
Addressing the media in Accra on Wednesday, the Minister for Health, Dr Bernard Oko-Boye, said health workers’ migration is a global phenomenon and Ghana is not spared.
“Anytime you have more than you need, you have to be innovative and find ways to give opportunities to your nurses,” the Minister stated, adding that, the UK, Germany and Jamaica are working with Ghana to make sure health workers can migrate to these countries seamlessly to work, send remittances home to stimulate the economy.
He added that working with local and international frameworks for the deployment and reintegration of professionals would ensure that the Ghanaian health workforce can move seamlessly between Ghana and other countries while contributing to local health needs.
Dr Oko-Boye noted that sending nurses to other countries to work is a way of strengthening production, deployment and integration of health workforce to meet local and global demand.
