The President of the Ghana Chamber of Commerce and Industry has backed Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia’s vision of tax digitisation saying it is worth pursuing as it is progressive.
Delivering his speech at GNCCI’s Dialogue with Vice President Dr. Bawumia, on Wednesday, March 20, 2024, at Best Western Hotel, Accra, Dr. Clement Osei Amoako, said the best way to realise the country’s goals in its tax administration is to digitalise the system.
“The Chamber acknowledges government’s effort led primarily by His Excellency the Vice President towards championing a new era of a digitalized Ghana. An era where registration, documentation, payments, revenue collection, public consultations, citizen’s identification, among other key business activities are made easier and faster leveraging the power of digital technologies” he said.
This, Dr. Osei Amoako indicated, has contributed to a decline in corruption and significant reduction in institutional bureaucracy.
The Chamber also acknowledged the efforts of government in the past 7 years in ensuring sustainable economic growth and development, especially during the period COVID-19 pandemic, and the Russia-Ukraine war when the economy was hard hit.
“These efforts have contributed to significant decline in inflation from a record high of 54.1 percent in December 2022 to 23.2 percent in February 2024” Dr. Osei Amoako stated.
It could be recalled that at the delivery of his vision for Ghana event which was held on the campus of the University of Professional Studies, Accra, in February this year, Vice President Bawumia outlined a number of policy initiatives to formalise the Ghanaian economy further and that included intensified efforts in digitisation which will also encapsulate digitalising the tax system in the country.
