A seven-member delegation from The Gambia led by the Sectary for Trade, Industry, Regional Integration and Employment, Mr Lamin Dampha, has paid a courtesy call on the Minister for Employment and Labour Relations in Accra.
The delegation was in Ghana to gain knowledge and skills, share experiences and learn the best practices from Ghana’s public employment programmes and employment tracking systems.
The Minister for Employment and Labour Relations, Mr Ignatius Baffour-Awuah, noted that there was a lot to learn from each other, stating that Ghana and the Gambia have a common heritage.
He indicated that the Ministry is responsible for advising the government on job creation, ensuring a good relationship between workers and employers and also taking care of workers’ retirement.
He said there is a school-to-work transition where graduates have a temporal work called the National Service Scheme, which is compulsory for every Ghanaian.
He explained that in Ghana, the legal employment age is 18 years, adding that, that was to ensure children are not engaged in hazardous work, which goes against the international protocols Ghana has signed.
On his part, the leader of the delegation, Mr Lamin Dampha noted it was a conscious decision by the Government of Gambia to choose Ghana to come and learn and share experiences on employment and labour-related matters.
