The Ghana Education Service (GES) has recruited 93, 724 teaching and non-teaching staff to beef up human resource requirements at the pre-tertiary level of the education sector, the Minister for Education, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh has said.
He said the GES has recruited 24,472 graduates, 55,710 Diplomas, 10,310 non-teaching staff and has also employed 3,232 people to replace staff who exited the Service in the primary and secondary schools respectively.
He said this when he took his turn on the Nation Building update in Accra. The event was dubbed “The Teacher at the Centre of Quality Education.”
He disclosed that the Ministry has introduced an allowance for professional teachers and non-teachers to boost their morale to give off their best.
He said professional teachers would be paid GH₡ 1,200 per year while non-professional teachers would receive GH₡800 allowance per year, adding that the Ministry would continue to institute measures that could improve the skill set of teachers to enable to them to be abreast with the modern trends in teaching.
He said the Ministry has an agreement with the University of Cape Coast to reduce the top-up duration of Diploma in Education holders who want to acquire a first degree from three to one year and hinted that this would be effective in 2021.
On technical education, he disclosed that the Appiah-Menka University of Skills Training and Entrepreneurial Development has been given the necessary support to provide higher education in technical and vocational training to teachers to mentor students in the Technical and Vocational Education Training (TVET) institutions, adding that this would transform TVET education in the country.
