The government is in the process of amending the Road Safety Traffic Regulations 2012, LI 2180 to improve safety and security on the roads.
The amendment is being spearheaded by the Ministry of Transport, the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA), the National Roads Safety Authority (NRSA) and the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service.
Minister for Transport, Mr Kweku Ofori Asiamah, who disclosed this at a national consultative forum on road traffic crashes and review of the road traffic regulations 2012, LI 2180 in Accra, added that significant provisions of the road traffic regulations have been implemented and enforcement was ongoing.
He urged the National Road Safety Authority to continue championing the education of transport operators on road traffic regulations.
Mr Ofori Asiamah said the Ministry of Transport was collaborating with the Ministry of Communication to introduce guidelines for the safe operation of motorcycles used for courier services in the country
On his part, the director of the Motor Traffic and Transport Division, Supt Dr Sasu Mensah, said 11,659 injuries have been recorded from 20,225 road accidents with 2,126 deaths between January and September 2021.
He said statistics showed that most of the people who died as a result of road accidents fell within the age bracket of 18-60 years, indicating that the country was losing its workforce to road accidents
He said the accidents that were recorded within the stated period were due to negligence on the part of drivers and disclosed the MTTD was introducing reforms to reduce corruption, modify the traffic laws and mitigate traffic indiscipline.
