The Deputy Minister for Local Government, Decentralisation and Rural Development (LGDRD) Vincent Ekow Assafuah, has commended the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly for effectively implementing the Holistic Reinforcement for Sustainable Development (HORESD) Project.
The project, which was launched in January 2022 and funded by the European Union (EU), is to address waste management challenges in the Garden City.
Paying a working visit to the KMA on Tuesday, Mr Assafuah noted that the project has achieved its main objective of promoting sustainable development and environmental cleanliness in the metropolis.
He also commended the Mayor of Kumasi, Mr Samuel Pyne, for leading the Assembly to build two recycling plants in the metropolis.
Mr Pyne for his part, said the recycling plants would help to turn waste into an income-generating venture.
He added that the assembly has been very instrumental in providing infrastructure and support for the vulnerable and promoting security.
“Collaborating with Bloomberg Philanthropies, the assembly has supported youth to fight climate change,” he noted.
He added that 14 groups had been selected out of 34 applicants to access the Youth Climate Action Microgrant.
“Our major challenge as Assembly is the congestion situation in the Central Business District (CBD) of Kumasi but when phase two of Kejetia Market and Krofrom Market are fully functional, congestion challenge would be reduced,” he said.
