The Northern Regional Minister, Alhaji Shani Alhassan Shaibu, has emphasized the critical importance of environmental sustainability and the collective responsibility to protect our planet for future generations.
This was during the launch of the 2024 edition of the Green Ghana Day which is slated on the 7th of June 2024 under the theme “Growing for a Greener Tomorrow’ as part of Government’s ongoing efforts to restore Ghana’s forest cover whiles combating the far-reaching impacts of climate change.
The project aims to plant ten million trees nationwide, with the Northern Region contributing 600,000 trees across its territory.
According to the Minister, since the inception of the project in 2021, the Northern Region has witnessed some remarkable progress such as economic, social, and environmental benefits of environmental conservation.
The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Samuel Abu Jinapor, bemoaned the alarming rate of forest loss in past years but pointed out the government’s aggressive afforestation and reforestation programs to keep the forests intact.
Naa Bapra Zangbalun Lan Yakubu Mahama who spoke on behalf of the Overlord of Dagbon reaffirmed his commitment to environmental conservation and urged Dagbon’s chiefs to actively participate in the Green Ghana Day initiative, signaling a united front towards a greener and more sustainable future.
