As part of his tour of the Northern Region, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on Wednesday, 29th July 2020, cut sod for the construction of the $30 million Yendi Water Supply Project.
In fulfilment of a pledge the President made to Yaa-Na Mahama Abukari II at the 2019 Damba Festival, the Water Supply Project, financed by the India Exim Bank, will supply 15,000 cubic metres of water daily to meet the water demand of the area.
The President said the old Yendi Water Supply System, which takes its source from the River Daka, was over 59 years old and could no longer serve the growing population and the demand of water in the area.
“Since its construction, it has not undergone any rehabilitation works and it is no longer capable of satisfying the water needs of Yendi and its environs. Additionally, because of the considerable increase in population and economic growth, it has become necessary to construct a new water supply system to meet the water demands of Yendi and its adjoining towns and communities,” he added.
President Akufo-Addo said the construction of the water project signal the beginning of the infrastructural projects he promised the people of Dagbon, adding that he would not renegade on the promise he made to the people of Dagbon.
President Akufo-Addo thanked the Indian Government and Prime Minister Narendra Modi for helping his administration to secure funding from the Indian Exim Bank to make Yendi Water Supply Project a reality.
It is a “good testimony of the strong bonds of co-operation and collaboration that exist between our two countries. Long may it continue”, he added.
He urged the contraction company of the project, Messrs WAPCOS Ltd of India, to work hard to ensure the completion of the project on time.
