President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has cut the sod for the construction of a $223 million Tamale Water Supply Project on Tuesday, July 27, 2020.
The Plant will process water from the White Volta at Yapei and produce 29.7 million gallons of water per day. This will increase the efficiency in the supply of water in the Tamale Metropolitan Area.
“This will be, by far, the biggest water project in the five northern regions and the second biggest in the history of our country,” the President said.
Explaining the rationale behind the Project, he said, the population in Tamale Metropolitan Area keeps increasing which has stressed the existing water supply facility leading to water shortage in some parts of Tamale.
President Akufo-Addi said a new water treatment plant would be constructed at Yapei, in addition to the current one, to supply water concurrently to Tamale and its environs to guarantee the availability and adequate potable water in the Metropolis.
The government has secured a credit facility of US$223,287,979.56 from the UK Export Finance and the Deutsche Bank AG, London Branch to execute the project on time.
“I am happy to state that, upon completion, the project will provide potable water to over 792,000 inhabitants of Tamale and its environs”, he added.
He said the projects are tied with the government agenda of providing adequate water for all Ghanaians by the year 2030, in fulfilment of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals Six.
Reiterating his government’s policy to ensure that all 16 regions of the country have access to water, he told residents of Tamale that since he assumed office in 2017, the government secured funding for the construction of water treatment plants to increase access to water of the citizenry.
“I am happy to announce that the government has secured funding for the Upper East, Tamale, Damongo, Yendi, Wenchi, and Keta Water Supply Projects. The Upper East Water Supply Project, which began in 2018, is progressing steadily, whilst the sod cutting for the Damongo and Yendi projects will take place tomorrow, and those of Wenchi and Keta shortly,” he said.
