The Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations Office for West Africa and the Sahel, Mr. Leonardo Santos Simão, has expressed confidence in Ghana’s ability to conduct peaceful and credible elections in December 2024.
Mr Leonardo paid a courtesy call on the Minister for the Interior, Henry Quartey in Accra and commended Ghana’s competent institutions, hailing the country as a beacon of democracy in Africa.
He reiterated the UN’s continuous support to Ghana through various agencies, including the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the United Nations Peacebuilding Fund.
Mr Quartey assured the delegation that the Ghana Police Service, in collaboration with other security and intelligence agencies, has formed an election task force to ensure peace before, during, and after the elections.
He said the task force engages stakeholders to ensure a peaceful and inclusive electoral process.
The Minister reiterated the government’s commitment to ensuring internal security, maintaining law and order as well as conducting peaceful elections. He assured the delegation that all necessary protocols were being put in place to ensure peace and security in the country.
