The Affirmative Action Law ((AAL) Coalition has urged the media to promote gender-sensitive reporting ahead of the December 2024 General elections.
Speaking at a media engagement on Wednesday in Accra, Ms Becky Enyonam Ahadzi, called on the media to challenge harmful stereotypes and avoid statements that could undermine women’s participation in electoral processes.
“We ask that you offer visibility to women throughout these elections and you refrain from gender stereotypes, remarks and attacks that would cripple their efforts in the elections”, the Coordinator of the AAL Coalition, Madam Ahadzi said.
On the legal framework, Madam Ahadzi referenced the Gender Equity Act, which imposes penalties, including fines or imprisonment, for violations such as discriminatory or harmful media coverage.
“The media has the power to either empower or disempower, there is therefore the importance of creating a level playing field for women vying for political office”, she added.
On her part, the Senior Programmes Officer of ABANTU, Mary Akromah stated that the project aimed at enhancing the participation in decision-making spaces within Ghana’s governance system.
“A crucial part of this initiative is recognising the pivotal role of the media in shaping democratic discourse and ensuring accountability during the election,” she added.
She emphasised that the media’s duty goes beyond just reporting events, hence imploring the media to amplify underrepresented perspectives, challenge societal biases and build an environment in which all citizens can engage freely and safely.
“Your stories have the power to influence action, foster tolerance and inspire change,” she said.
