The National Peace Council has called on security agencies and the youth of Ghana to promote peace and unity ahead of the December elections.
The appeal was made at the commemoration of the 2024 International Day of Peace in Accra.
Speaking at the event, the Chairman of the National Peace Council, Dr Ernest Adu-Gyamfi, stated that peace was necessary for the progress and well-being of societies, urging all stakeholders to contribute to a successful election.
“Let us ensure that our actions before, during, and after the elections reflect the culture of peace we’re committed to cultivating. Peace must be cultivated daily, and not just during election periods,” he said
He acknowledged that elections often bring tension but called for a commitment to dialogue, tolerance and unity.
On his part, the Deputy Commandant of Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre (KAIPTC), Air Commodore David Anetey Akrong noted that peace is valuable and called for the cultivation of an attitude that would lead to a violent-free election.
Credible elections depend highly on inclusiveness, transparency and accountability through collaboration, urging the security agencies in particular to play their roles well.
The United Nations Resident Coordinator in Ghana, Mr.Charles Abani, praised Ghana’s commitment to peace amid global tensions, particularly encouraging the youth to safeguard the nation’s peacefulness.
“Peace is not a static condition, but an active pursuit and a deliberate process that required a strategic construction and nurturing of the social, political and economic frameworks that promoted harmony, justice and coexistence,” he added.
