President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has said the conduct of a free, fair and transparent elections that transcends disputations, forms a good basis for strengthening cohesion amongst Ghanaians and prevent agitations.
The President said Ghana had rightly earned a reputation as the pacesetter in democratic governance on the African continent, “a reputation I am determined to uphold, and, indeed, enhance before, during and after the December 7, elections.”
He entreated Ghanaians to work together to create an environment that would allow the electorate to make their decision on December 7, in a free, peaceful and secure environment.
Multiplicity of media organisations, the power of social media, the existence of transparent ballot boxes, the decentralised nature of tallying and tabulation, the mode of voter verification, as well as, the recent compilation of the new voters’ register had all engendered trust and confidence in the Ghanaian to elect who leads them, he said.
Speaking at a virtual Annual Conference of the Ghana Bar Association (GBA), on Monday, September 14, 2020, President Akufo-Addo said all these enhanced processes had strengthened the cohesion of the nation.
He said while electoral disputes had wreaked havoc in some African countries, Ghana had been spared such incidents.
Nonetheless, President Akufo-Addo cautioned that Ghanaians cannot and must not take this good fortune for granted.
He urged all, including political party candidates and voters, to conduct themselves in a manner that “keeps us together as one people, irrespective of our ethnic, religious, gender or political differences and affiliations. The Ghana Project cannot afford ethnic agitations and sectarian pronouncements.”
