the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) parliamentary candidate for Wa West, Superintendent Peter Lanchene Toobu (Retired) has confessed spending GH20,000 on his campaign in the just ended NDC primaries. In an exclusive interview on Citi FM’s Point Blank programme, he explained that, the amount spent was just to fuel people around to talk to people and feeding for his campaign team.
Asked whether, politics is bigger than policing, he responded in the affirmative that, politics drive the nation because it is the President who appoints the Inspector General of Police (IGP). So, the highest office an officer can attain in the service is to become the IGP, making politics bigger than policing.
On his thoughts on his former boss, David Asante-Appeatu, he made it known that the former IGP is a fine gentleman and even calm when under pressure.
He divulged that the current IGP, James Oppong Boanuh is a professional police officer in terms of administration but could not attest to his operational prowess.
When asked whether the current IGP should have been given a contract extension to be an Acting IGP, he made it known that, the current IGP was already on contract when he was appointed to act and as to whether his contract will be extended, it is the perogative of the President.
He pulled no punches, by saying in principle, it is unacceptable to offer contracts to a retired IGP because there are a lot of officers in the qeue. According to him, it stunts the growth of other officers who are nursing the dream to ascend the position of an IGP.
On when he became a member of the NDC, he asserted that, he was a cadre before he joined the service. He said he has been a paid up member of the NDC since 1992 but he was not paying when he was in the service. However, his family continued to pay for him.
Asked whether it is allowed for a policeman to bear a political party’s card, he responded that, a police officer can but must not be partisan. This he says, a police officer not engaging in active partisan politics.
Supt. (Rtd) Toobu beat the incumbent MP for Wa West, Hon. Joseph Yieleh Chireh in the just ended NDC primaries to clinch his ticket for the 2020 elections
