The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), led by former president John Dramani Mahama, has won Ghana’s presidential election held on December 7th.
The Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), Jean Mensah, announced the results on Monday at the EC headquarters in Accra.
According to the official tally, John Dramani Mahama secured 6,328,397 votes, representing 56.55% of votes from 267 constituencies out of the expected 276 constituency results.
Dr Mahamudu Bawumia of the current ruling New Patriotic Party received 4,657,304 votes, representing 41.64% of the ballots.
She stated that the results from the nine remaining constituencies would not change the outcome of the elections.
This outcome marks a change in Ghana’s political leadership, with the NDC taking over from the NPP after the election.
Mahama, who previously served as president from 2012 to 2016, will return to the nation’s highest office following this victory.
