The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has organised a parliamentary candidates’ dialogue between contesting political parties in the upcoming December Polls in Buipe in the Yapei-Kusawgu Constituency in the Savannah Region.
The event, which brought together only the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the Ghana Union Movement (GUM) parliamentary candidates, was attended by hundreds of people, including chiefs, professional groupings and artisans. Mr. Samuel Akuamoah Asare, the Deputy Chairman in charge of Operations at the NCCE, Head Office, Accra, was also present to observe the programme.
Addressing the gathering, Chief Gbankulso Boah, the Chairman of the Inter-Party Dialogue Committee (IPDC) intimated that the dialogue mechanism was to foster unity amongst political parties and reduce the use of intemperate words among contesting candidates in the constituency.
Chief Buah said that the arrangement is to allow the public to be well-informed of the vision of the various political parties and make their choice of parliamentary candidate.
On his part, Mr. Saaka Y. Muftawu, the District Officer of the NCCE, disclosed that dialogue is one of the programmes of the Commission to promote democracy, unity and peaceful elections.
Mr. Saaka added that the Commission conducted a survey on issues that bother the Ghanaian voter, revealing that education, employment, health, roads and infrastructure, the economy and agriculture are areas of public concern.
Mr Awudu Adam, the parliamentary candidate for the Ghana Union Movement (GUM), promised to build more CHPS compounds to cater for the health needs of the constituents.
Mr Adam noted that the incidence of snake bites remained a headache in the constituency, and therefore, resolved to tackle the problem.
He also promised to regularise the herbal medical sector, thereby creating employment for people.
Mr Adamu Zakaria, the NPP candidate, said he would ensure that children of school-going age would gain access to education since his party promotes free education for children.
He lamented the poor condition of Buipe’s inner roads and assured the constituents of a face-lift of these roads if he is elected.
