President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has been re-elected as Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
President Akufo-Addo was given the nod to serve another one-year term during ECOWAS’s extraordinary session held on Tuesday, February 2, 2021, via virtual conference.
This was contained in a press statement issued by ECOWAS at the end of the conference.
The statement said President Akufo-Addo with the support of the Ministerial Ad hoc Committee on Institutional Reforms would lead the implementation of institutional reforms relating to enhanced financial management and internal control of the ECOWAS.
The reforms would improve economic and social development in the sub-region, it said.
“The Heads of State and Governments express sincere appreciation to H.E. Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, President of the Republic of Ghana, Chair of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, for his leadership in steering the affairs of the Community,” the statement said.
President Akufo-Addo was appointed ECOWAS Chair in October 2020 at an ECOWAS meeting in Niger on September 7, 2020, to take over from the President of Niger, His Excellency Mahamadou Issoufou.
