The Minister for Parliamentary Affairs, Mr Osei Kyei -Mensah-Bonsu has said the Constitutional Instrument proposed by the Electoral Commission (EC) would deepen the country’s democratic system.
He stated that the proposed exercise was the best way to enhance free and fair elections in 2024.
The Minister disclosed this on Wednesday during a discussion on democracy on Kessben FM in Kumasi.
He stated, “The EC together with the National Identification Authority will continue to register eligible Ghanaians for their Ghana Cards till next year.”
Mr Mensah-Bonsu pointed out that before voting, one must submit to the rules and procedures.
“Article 42 of 1992 of the Constitution says that every citizen of Ghana of eighteen years of age or above and of sound mind has the right to vote and is entitled to be registered as a voter for the purposes of public elections and referenda,” he noted.
The EC is proposing a new constitutional instrument through which it intends to make the Ghana card the sole identification document for voter registration.
