The Ministry of Energy has provided 200 LED streetlights and 300 solar lamps to support the Energy Commission’s Senior High School renewal energy challenge.
The Deputy Minister for Energy, Mr Collins Adomako-Mensah, disclosed this at the fifth edition of the renewable energy challenge in Accra.
He promised that the ministry would supply 600 more streetlights and 100 solar lamps for the next three editions of the challenge.
“By doing this, we expect to improve the lighting of schools to ensure the security of students and staff,” he added.
The Deputy Minister noted that the objectives of the competition are to instil in students a passion for solving issues related to renewable energy, energy efficiency and climate change implementation.
The initiative also aims to develop students’ presentation skills, promote self-confidence and encourage hard work through public recognition and rewards.
“This year’s theme encourages students to develop projects that utilize renewable energy technologies to improve degraded lands and polluted water.
“It is imperative to address water pollution issues resulting from illegal mining activities on our water bodies and riverbanks,” he added.
On her part, the Second Lady, Samira Bawumia, urged the Energy Commission to continue the initiative and expressed a desire for a sustained partnership to provide modern and efficient biomass kitchens to more senior high schools.
The Executive Secretary of the Energy Commission, Mr Oscar Amonoo-Meiza, said the initiative aims to fulfil the Commission’s mandate under the Renewable Energy Act, which seeks to advance and effectively utilize renewable energy through public education and the regulation of industry entrepreneurs.
Mr Amonoo-Meiza noted that the challenge is not merely a competition but an opportunity for the next generation of innovators and inventors to make a tangible difference in their communities and beyond.
“By embracing renewable energy technologies, these students are helping to shape a sustainable future for the country,” he added.
