The Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, Mrs Mavis Hawa Koomson, has stated that the government’s vision is to transform the fisheries sector into a modern, efficient and lucrative industry.
She said the fisheries sector would be turned into an industry capable of meeting domestic demand for fish, improving the well-being of fishermen and fish growers, as well as creating job opportunities along the value chain.
She said this at the 14th National Farmers Day Forum, which forms part of the National Farmers Day celebrations in Accra.
The Minister noted that despite the obstacles such as high feed costs and illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing confronting the aquaculture and marine sectors, the ministry was implementing a variety of initiatives to tackle these challenges.
“We stand at a critical juncture, faced with challenges that demand not just innovative and forward-thinking approaches,” she said
Mrs Koomson gave the assurance of continuous collaboration with stakeholders and development partners in the sustainable management of fisheries resources for current and future generations.
The 14th National Farmers Day Forum was sponsored by the Agriculture Development Bank.
