The government has released GH¢1 million into the Human Trafficking Fund to help the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection effectively combat human trafficking.
the Minister for Gender Children and Social Protection, Mrs Cynthia Mamle Morrison, who disclosed this when she addressed journalists at the meet-the-press series in Accra on Wednesday, said 611 victims of human trafficking were rescued in 2019.
Two hundred of the victims were children while 411 were adults. In addition to this, the Ministry is currently sheltering 63 victims of human trafficking.
She said due to efforts of the Ministry in rescuing victims of human trafficking, Ghana is currently on Tier 2 of the United States of America Department of Labour Tier Ranking, demonstrating that Ghana’s efforts in fighting human trafficking were recognised internationally.
She disclosed that the Ministry has embarked on a series of community dialogues and sensitisations to increase public awareness of the negative effects of human trafficking and irregular migration.
On the adoption and foster care of children, Mrs Morrison said the government has amended the Children Act 560 (1998) so that their new parents would take proper care of these children.
Also, the government through the Ghana School Feeding Programme (GSFP), she said is currently providing 2,980,000 pupils in 8,683 public basic schools one hot and nutritious meal a day.
She said the GSFP has built the capacity of 9,178 caterers and cooks in 11 regions on innovative nutrition training to improve the quality of meals serve to pupils in basic schools.
