The Ministry of Local Government, Decentralization and Rural Development (MLGRD) will be conducting a Household Travel Survey (HTS) for households and residence in the Greater Accra Metropolitan Area (GAMA) from Monday 24th July 2023 to Saturday 30th September 2023.
The objective of the survey is to collect information to help understand how and why people move from their homes every day, determine their travel patterns within and between cities and identify factors influencing their choices for a particular mode and means of travel.
The Minister for Local Government and Rural Development, Mr Dan Botwe, announced this at a press briefing on Household Travel Survey (HTS) in Accra on Wednesday.
He added that the survey would also provide crucial insights into the experiences of different households on their transport choices and trip satisfaction which would contribute significantly to developing efficient transportation strategies and policies that cater for the unique needs of citizens.
Mr Botwe disclosed that the survey would target approximately 7500 households across diverse communities and residences in 29 Metropolitan, Municipal/District Assemblies (MMDAs) in GAMA.
“We will deploy standard data collection tools to gather the data, ensuring statistical accuracy and confidentiality of respondent,” he added.
He noted that the Ministry would assign well-identified enumerators to visit selected households to administer questionnaires to comprehensively capture travel-related information.
“The questions will cover topics such as travel mode preferences (trotro or private vehicle), trip duration, the purpose of travel, frequency of travel, cost of travel, access to transportation options, and challenges faced during travel,” he stressed.
The Minister appealed to media houses to use their channels and platforms to publicize the household travel survey throughout the survey period to ensure wide participation of the household.
“Other channels such as publicity posters, jingles, Information Service Department public address vans and social media platforms will be leveraged to publicize the survey,” he stated.
The MMDAs where the survey would be conducted include Accra Metro, Tema Metro, Ga West, La Nkwantanang Madina, Ga Central, Ga East, Ga South, Tema West, Ashiaman, Kpone Katamanso, Ledzokuku, Krowor, Korley Klottey, and La Dade-Kotopon.
