The Greater Accra Resilient and Integrated Development (GARID) project is progressively addressing the flooding and solid waste management challenges in the Odaw Basin, Mr Osei Bonsu Amoah, Minister of State, Ministry of Local Government, Decentralisation and Rural Development, has said.
He noted that the project has also provided infrastructure in priority flood-prone informal settlements within the basin.
Mr Amoah said when the Ministry handed over 19 drones to 17 Metropolitan and Municipal Assemblies as part of the GARID project.
The Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council (RCC) and the Land Use and Spatial Planning Authority (LUSPA) also received the drones.
This initiative marks a significant step towards enhancing the capacity of the Assemblies, RCC and LUSPA to monitor the buffers of the water bodies against encroachment and surveillance of solid waste hotspots.
The Minister added that, “Since 2022, we have disbursed annual grants totalling $1.95 million to 17 MMAs under the GARID project to support operations and maintenance of secondary and tertiary drains in the flood hotspots. These grants have been instrumental in the desilting and dredging of these secondary and tertiary drains.”
He encouraged stakeholders to renew their commitment to working together to achieve the goals of the GARID project.
