A team from the European Union (EU) and German Government (GIZ) has paid a courtesy call on the Ministry of Local Government, Decentralisation and Rural Development (MLGDRD) on Thursday in Accra.
The meeting discussed the new EU Regional Programme and the preparations towards its implementation in Ghana. The duration of the programme is from 2024 to 2027 and the funding involved is a technical support fund from the EU and the GIZ.
The Chief Director of the Ministry, Mr. Amin Abdul-Rahaman, expressed his appreciation to the European Union and the German Government for their efforts in bringing such a commendable initiative to Ghana.
Mr. Abdul- Rahaman explained that, programmes on Local Governance and Social Cohesion are always welcome because it paves the way for good governance and development. Adding that, the initiative was a great idea and the Ministry was prepared to support it.
In their presentation, the team from EU and the GIZ expressed appreciation to the Ministry for the support. According to them, preparations for the start of the programme started two years ago and all potential beneficiaries have been involved in the process.
The team mentioned that, the objective of the programme was to reduce risk for human safety, improve on good Local Governance, Social Cohesion and Economic Development across border countries.
In explaining their next course of action for the programme, the team stated that, the selection of the intervention zones was needed and the programme was going to build on those already initiated.
The Minister for MLGDRD, Mr. Martin Adjei-Mensah Korsah, received the programme with much gratitude and mentioned that, interventions of such nature are needed to make the borders safe. He assured the EU and GIZ team of a coordinated effort to help successfully implement the programme.
The countries to benefit are, Burkina Faso, Mali, Ivory Coast and Ghana.
