The Minister for Information, Mrs Fatimatu Abubakar, has lauded the Right to Information Commission for significantly increasing information requests under the RTI law.
Speaking during a courtesy call by the Commission on Wednesday, she underscored a notable increase from 785 requests in 2022 to 1,749 requests in 2023.
She stated, “This notable increase reflects a growing culture of accountability and citizen engagement.”
The Minister also indicated the importance of transparency and access to information in nurturing democratic governance.
She reiterated the government’s commitment to supporting initiatives that enhance public access to information and promote accountability across public institutions.
On his part, the Executive Secretary of the RTI Commission, Mr Yaw Sarpong, raised concerns about a decline in the submission of annual reports by public institutions to the Commission.
He indicated the Commission’s commitment to improving compliance.
Mr Sarpong outlined the Commission’s strategic initiatives, including regional outreach programmes and heightened awareness campaigns to increase public participation and understanding of the RTI law.
The delegation was led by the Chairperson of the Commission, Justice Rtd. K.A. Ofori Atta.
