The Minister for Information, Mr Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, has called on development partners to support the Media Capacity Enhancement Programme and the Coordinated Mechanism for the Safety of Journalists as a means to equip the media to discharge their mandate.
He made this call in a statement to commemorate World Press Freedom Day on the international theme: “Shaping a future of Rights: Freedom of Expression as a driver for all other human rights”.
The Minister said the media has been very instrumental over the years in highlighting various instances of abuse of some rights by sections of society and urged the media to remain resolute on this path.
He advised the media to focus on human rights, ensure that the economic rights of citizens were fully actualised and support programmes by state and non-state actors to build back the economy faster after the recent economic challenges.
Mr Oppong Nkrumah pledged the Ministry of Information’s commitment to supporting the media stakeholder groups such as the Ghana Journalist Association, the Communication Educators platform, Ghana Independent Broadcasters Association and the National Media Commission to implement Ghana’s Media Support Programmes.
