The Minister for Information, Mrs Fatimatu Abubakar, has called on journalists to prioritise accurate and factual reporting as they incorporate Artificial Intelligence (AI) into their work.
She noted that while AI can enhance journalistic activities, it must not compromise the integrity of news reporting.
Speaking at the Ghana Journalists Association’s (GJA) 75th Anniversary commemorative lecture on Thursday in Accra, she stated that journalists must be equipped with knowledge and skills to use AI technology responsibly.
She said, “The use of Artificial Intelligence has a huge prospect for the world. For Journalists, it has the potential to boost efficiency and facilitate audience engagement, depending on how it is being approached. Therefore, this requires adequate training and skill development to minimise the disadvantages of the AI technology.”
According to the Minister, the future of journalism would be determined by media organisations’ ability to adopt new technologies to remain competitive while also improving training and providing necessary tools for the use of AI.
She also indicated the need to guard against biases, misinformation, disinformation and erosion of public trust in the media.
“The Ministry remains committed to collaborating with the GJA to equip journalists with the skills and resources to navigate modern journalism,” she added.
