President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, on Monday, July 27, 2020, commissioned a Water Supply Project at Yapei in the Savannah Region.
The GH¢5,665,966.42 water system is a fulfillment of a campaign pledge he made to the people of Yapei in the run-up to the 2016 elections.
The Yapei water project, which is under the Sustainable Rural Water and Sanitation Project, was initiated in 2017, financed with a credit facility from the World Bank, at a total cost of US$47.5 million.
Apart from the Savannah Region, the Rural Water Project has been implemented in 10 other Regions, namely Ahafo, Bono, Bono East, Central, Western, Western North, Northern, North East, Upper West and Upper East Regions.
The Project components include the construction of piped water supply systems, support for household latrine construction, health and hygiene education, and environmental and social safeguards.
President Akufo-Addo advised the people to protect water bodies from activities such as galamsey, sand winning and farming along river banks in the area to prolong the lifespan of the treatment plant.
“This would help guarantee improved water supply, in terms of quality, quantity and reliability, to the people of Yapei and surrounding communities. Water-borne diseases, such as guinea worm, cholera and dysentery, would also be eliminated,” he added.
He encouraged inhabitants of Yapei, with requisite skills in water systems management, to take advantage of the employment opportunities created by the provision of these water systems.
The government, President Akufo-Addo added, would continue to provide additional resources to ensure that many other communities in the Savannah and other Regions benefit from these life-changing projects.
