The Regional Maritime University (RMU), as part of efforts to champion gender inclusivity, has awarded scholarships to three outstanding female students under the RMU Scholarship and Financial Aid Scheme
The scholarships awarded to Theodora Hayford, Priscilla E. Dadjo and Hagar Frimpong represent a groundbreaking initiative aimed at challenging longstanding gender barriers in traditionally male-dominated maritime industries.
The scholarships do not only provide educational benefits but also encourage more women to enrol in marine and seafarers’ courses, ultimately paving the way for a more diverse and inclusive maritime workforce.
In an interview with the media, Theodora Hayford shared her incredible journey and the transformative impact of the RMU Scholarship.
“I have always strived for success but there were moments when I couldn’t see the progress aligning with my efforts,
“However, being chosen as one of the first beneficiaries of this scholarship has brought immense relief to me and my family.” she disclosed
Theodora Hayford, currently in her third year of the scholarship, is pursuing a four-year BSC Port and Shipping degree programme at RMU, with full tuition coverage.
On the other hand, Priscilla and Hagar have completed a three-month welding and fabrication course, gaining valuable skills in a field traditionally dominated by men.
The RMU Scholarship and Financial Aid Scheme is not only empowering young women but also challenging deeply entrenched gender stereotypes in the maritime and seafaring industries.
It marks a significant step towards a more inclusive and diverse future in these traditionally male-centric fields. This initiative represents a significant milestone in the pursuit of gender equality and equal opportunities in the world of maritime education.
The RMU Scholarship is not just providing financial aid; it’s paving the way for a new era of gender inclusivity in maritime education, ensuring that women like Theodora, Priscilla, and Hagar can break through gender barriers and thrive in these vital industries.
The RMU’s commitment to promoting diversity and equality is evident in the transformative impact of these scholarships, making waves towards a brighter, more inclusive future for maritime education.
