The Minister for Youth and Sports, Mr. Mustapha Ussif has announced that Ghana is set to host the first edition of the 2023 African Para Games.
The Games, scheduled from the 3rd to 12th of September 2023 will be used as a test case for the 13th African Games.
Mr. Ussif disclosed this at a press briefing on Wednesday in Accra on Ghana’s preparation towards hosting the 13th African Games, Sports and Youth Development.
He indicated that the three sports to be participated in by twenty-two (22) countries are, Amputee Football, Wheelchair Basketball and Wheelchair Tennis.
“Expected number of participants for the Games is 1,314 including athletes, conference heads and volunteers,” he added.
According to him, the 13th African Games will adopt a “Green Game Strategy” which will focus on reduction of waste, emissions, water conservation, sustainable transportation and cycling.
He added that the strategy is aimed at making the event a model of sustainability and environmental responsibility, showcasing the commitment in creating a positive impact on the environment while hosting a world-class sporting event.
“By adopting eco-friendly practices, renewable energy sources and community involvement, we envision leaving a lasting legacy of environmental consciousness for future generations,” he reiterated.
In a related development, he said Ghana made history at the World Class Cross Country Championship held at Bathurst, Australia from 16th to 19th February 2023.
“William Amponsah placed 41st out of 1,000 athletes with a time of 32:00 while Abdallai Ramata placed 82nd out of 1,000 athletes with a time of 34:27 in the female race,” he stated.
