The maiden ceremony of the National Honours and Awards was held in 1960 when Ghana became a Republic under the leadership of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah to recognize individuals who had made honourable contributions to Ghana in a variety of professions and fields.
Since then, the initiative to honour deserving Ghanaians for their creativity, innovation, excellence and hard work has become part of our governance because successive governments believe that, to inspire dedicated and selfless service to society and nation, mention, recognition and praise must be accorded to those whom these are due in a fitting and nationally conspicuous manner.
